Sure Bets - Spring 2008
Rash by Pete Hautman Fast paced and easy to read but with a wide age appeal. Sports theme as well as taking place in a futuristic "Big Brother" type of society. Hautman is great for suspense readers and always has a little bit to think about too. It's been described as a Holes readalike.
13 Little Blue Envelopes by Maureen Johnson A little mystery, a little romance, a little adventure, and a girl who finds herself on a whirlwind scavenger hunt in Europe, arranged by her aunt and slowly fed to her through the titular envelopes.
An Abundance of Katherines by John Green Two friends from Chicago address their post-high school ennui with a roadtrip to rural Arkansas. Hilarity and coming of age ensue.
Traitor by Andy McNabb Have your young guy patrons read through Anthony Horowitz's Stormbreaker series? Start them here with a British series of international intrigue and an orphan after the truth.
Cures for Heartbreak by Rabb? Not sure on this one. Good for Sarah Dessen readers (i.e. girls who like a slightly sappy story that's mainly realistic fiction -- think young Jodi Picoult) When her mother dies after a brief illness, a teen struggles with the constant fear of illness and death and finally settles into her new reality.
Vampire Academy by Mead or Twilight by Meyer Gotta love the vampire romance craze!
Uglies by Scott Westerfeld Probably THE surest bet around lately. Popular with 6th graders up through high school, guys and girls, fantasy and realistic fiction fans... Westerfeld is a winner.
